  • RSV Prophylaxis Plan - Summary of regional hospital plans

  • GSK recently announced a change to the recommended administration schedule for Bexsero vaccine. The change is related to the timing of the 2nd dose; adjusting the schedule from 1 month apart to 6 months apart. Details are HERE.

  • The Newborn Hyperbilirubinemia guide includes local contact information and criteria for home, inpatient, and birth hospital treatment options. 

  • Here is an algorithm on hemoglobinopathies created by Dr. Charles Quinn from the Division of Hematology. The algorithm is designed to assist local providers with referral decisions and treatment in the event of an abnormal hemoglobin result on newborn screening. NOTE: The algorithm includes the notification process followed by ODH specifically.  KY and IN may have slightly different processes.

  • Kentucky Public Health Department announced a health alert for increased cases of pertussis in the state.  The increase is consistent with current national and global trends.  Clinical guidance developed for Cincinnati Children’s staff is available HERE.

  • Outpatient Diagnostic Services - View schedule of lab, radiology and EKG services by location

  • Beginning July 9, Cincinnati Children’s is trialing a billable E-Consult process for Neurology and Genetics only. We will monitor the use and value of the system before expanding to other divisions. Review the FAQ to learn more.

  • Cincinnati Children’s is using ‘Remote Patient Monitoring’ (RPM) to extend care to patients who have been discharged after an asthma admission. We developed a Remote Patient Monitoring FAQ to help answer your questions and provide details about how we can collaborate with you using RPM. 

  • The CDC has issued a health advisory for increased N Meningitidis serogroup W in the U.S. and Europe. Details are HERE.

  • Imaging Guides for frequently requested Radiology, Ultrasound and Fluoroscopy orders. Refer to these guides to know what views to order based on the patient’s indication(s).

  • Epic Link Tips

    1. Effective Oct. 15, all lab orders placed in Epic Link require an ‘Expected Date’ to be entered to indicate an expected collection timeframe. More details are in the FAQ.

    2. Have you viewed the HOME page in Epic Link? The HOME page contains ‘Quick Links’ with several short videos (and PDF’s) to help navigate and use the system efficiently.  New tools are found there. Check it out!

    3. Did you know there is an overview of Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) available in Epic Link? Cincinnati Children’s is administering risk assessments which populate 10 SDoH including food insecurity, transportation, mental health, etc. The assessment scores create a color-coded visual (wheel) that can be viewed in the Longitudinal Plan of Care tab or the Plan of Care tab.

  • Pneumonia Update - Review of management guidelines

  • View a behavioral health resource that guides decision-making along the full continuum of care.

  • Infectious Disease, ENT and community practice leaders have developed a clinical update for Group A Strep Pharyngitis outlining testing and treatment of both primary and recurrent GAS infections.

  • Cincinnati Children’s created a new standardized screening process for suicide risk in adolescents.  The two-tiered process uses the National Institute of Mental Health’s (NIMH) ASQ screening tool and, if positive, can be followed up with the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS).  Details about the research and planned Epic enhancements found HERE.

  • Cincinnati Children’s COVID-19 MIS-C Algorithm (dated May 12, 2023).

  • The Emergency Dept (ED) created an algorithm for positive blood cultures to guide clinical decision-making for patients who have a positive blood culture after being discharged from the ED. 

  • Dermatology has developed a Triage Algorithm to provide visibility to how referrals flow through the department.  They will continue to use details from the referral sent to inform the scheduling priority.  A letter from Dr Marathe highlights referral details and upcoming faculty additions.

  • Ohio Dept of Health (ODH) added screening for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and X-linked Adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) to the Newborn Screening Panel (October 2022). This newborn screening document details both conditions. ODH recommends a referral to both Genetics AND Neurology within 2-5 days of a positive SMA screen and a referral to Genetics within 3 weeks of a positive X-ALD screen.

  8. Do you have patients/families living in Hamilton County? If so, they may be approached by Gallup to complete a survey about their health and wellbeing. Please share/post the flyer about the survey to alert families about it. Surveys begin in Oct–Nov and will continue quarterly through 2029

  9. On August 6, 2024, the temporary restraining order halting the implementation of HB68 for transgender care was lifted, which means the law is now in effect. The Transgender Health Center at Cincinnati Children’s will remain open and will follow the requirements of the law. View internal communication and resources HERE.

  10. Ohio Chapter of the AAP was awarded the Outstanding Chapter award for the 5th time! Read more about the chapter’s accomplishment HERE.

  11. Cardiology created a referral guide specifically for Preventive Cardiology programs like hypertension and cholesterol clinics.

  12. The Division of Psychiatry is offering a Neurobehavioral Partial Hospitalization Program (NB PHP) at College Hill for youth aged 10-17.  The program provides multidisciplinary evaluation and group-based treatment for kids with autism, borderline intellectual functioning or mild intellectual disability.   20. The Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics has important changes regarding referrals for children aged 6-12 years, effective 9/20/23. The Division of Psychiatry offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) which provides day-treatment for children and teens to improve management of:  School anxiety, emotions, behavior problems, and issues related to mental illness. Referrals can be made directly to the division (bypassing PIRC). PHP treatment is available at Green Township and our Norwood location. The admission/exclusion criteria can be used as a reference.

  24. Cincinnati Children’s has noticed a recent uptick in positive results for Lyme Disease.  There are several resources on Lyme Disease that you might find helpful to your practice. 

    1. For providers:  ODH surveillance data and the latest data for zoonoses (OH 2019). Additionally, a 2-page Lyme Disease Update was created in collaboration with Infectious Disease faculty. The document covers topics on clinical manifestations, differential dx, diagnostic testing, and treatment. The Division of Infectious Diseases also created a 1-page guide to tick removal in an ambulatory setting.

      1. As of August 15, CCHMC lab began offering in-house testing for Lyme disease antibodies. The in-house test is a Total Lyme with Reflex IgG & IgM (test code LAB00643).  Search our Test Directory for additional Lyme testing options that are available as send-out tests.

    2. For families:  Educational resources and a blog post from Infectious Diseases created in 2022.

  25. The Peri-op team created a 1-page resource that outlines factors that could contribute to surgical cancelations/rescheduling. The pre-anesthesia resource includes information related to recent illness, chronic conditions, medications and more.

  26. Did you know you can upload documents (or pictures) to a patient chart in Epic Link? That process complements the E-consult system when additional documentation is pertinent to your clinical question. Uploading details and the E-consult FAQ are available to you. Reminder:  E-consult communication is visible to MyChart users.

  27. Although the Hypermobility Clinic is closed to new referrals, OT/PT is still taking referrals for joint stability and strengthening for hyper mobile patients.  E-consult is also available for any non-urgent questions.  We are actively recruiting and in the interim, have compiled a resource list that includes materials for providers and families.

  28. OhioRISE provides specialized managed care for Ohio Medicaid children who have complex behavioral health or multiple system needs. If your practice accepts Medicaid insurance, this will impact you and the youth you serve. Find out what you need to know HERE.
